Improve Windows XP Performance

You can speed things up a bit by turning off all visual effects.

  1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties to open the System Properties dialog box.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and under Performance, click Settings.
  3. On the Visual Effects tab, select "Adjust for best performance" and click OK.

The result is far from fancy-lots of gray and no bells and whistles-but if it's better performance you're looking for, this setting makes a difference.
