You can speed things up a bit by turning off all visual effects.
- Right-click My Computer and select Properties to open the System Properties dialog box.
- Click the Advanced tab, and under Performance, click Settings.
- On the Visual Effects tab, select "Adjust for best performance" and click OK.
The result is far from fancy-lots of gray and no bells and whistles-but if it's better performance you're looking for, this setting makes a difference.
