How to Restore Open Windows Folders When You Log Off and On or Restart

Do you have favorite folders that you like to keep open when you are using Windows? Then you will know the annoyance of having open folders being closed when you have to log off or restart the computer. Fortunately, there is a way to tweak Windows so that open folders are restored when you log back on or restart. There is a setting for this in Folder Options and here is how it works.

Restore open folders in Windows XP

1. Open a folder or My Computer
2. Open the menu Tools
3. Select “Folder Options”
4. Click the tab “View”
5. Scroll down to the entry “Restore previous folder windows at logon” and check it
6. Click “OK”

There are a number of ways to get to Folder Options. Which one is better is a matter of personal preference. Here is one way:

1. Open a folder or Computer
2. Open the “Organize” drop-down menu
3. Select “Folder and Search Options”
4. Click the tab “View”
5. Scroll down to the entry “Restore previous folder windows at logon” and check it
6. Click “OK”

And there you have it. Now when you restart your computer or log off and on, the folders you had open previously will be restored.

Clean Up Windows

Some of the built-in functionality in Windows is underrated. The Disk Cleanup does a pretty handy job of wiping out junk you don’t need such as Microsoft Office temp files and old error reports.

To run Disk Cleanup, open My Computer. Right-click the drive the OS is installed on and click Properties. Under the General tab, you’ll see a Disk Cleanup button. Click it and the app will run an analysis of the machine. You can dump the Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Offline Webpages, Microsoft Error Reporting Temporary Files, Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Web Client/ Publisher Temporary Files, Temporary Offline Files, Offline Files, and Catalog Files for the Content Indexer with no ill effects.

HIDING SYSTEM TRAY ICONS: You can manually select how you want individual icons in the System Tray to be displayed.
1.Right click on the Taskbar
2.Select Properties
3.Check Hide inactive icons
4.Click on the Customize button
5.This will bring up a dialog box that will allow you to select one of three options for your applications: Hide when inactive, Always hide, or always show
6.Highlight current or past applications and make any changes you like.
7.A small arrow will now appear in the System Tray that will allow you to show or hide these icons.

GROUPING SIMILAR TASKBAR BUTTONS: When you open more than one document in the same program and then minimize each document, rather that  showing separate icons on the taskbar for each document, WindowsXP groups them under a single icon for that application. If you want to group, or ungroup, similar taskbar buttons,
1.    Right click on the Taskbar
2.    Select Properties
3.    Check or Uncheck Group similar taskbar buttons

CLOSING MULTIPLE TASKBAR ITEMS: You can highlight and close multiple taskbar windows at once by using the same syntax you use for selecting multiple files in Windows Explorer. To do this: 1.)Hold down the CTRL key and click on each taskbar item you want closed. 2.)When you are done selecting them, release CTRL and the mouse button. 3.)They will all become selected, and you can right click on any one of them and choose ‘close group’ to close all selected windows.

SPEEDING UP THE DISPLAY OF START MENUS: An easy way to speed up the display of the Start Menu Items is to turn off the menu shadow. 1.Right click on an open area of the Desktop 2.Select Properties 3.Click on the Appearance tab 4.Click on the Effects button 5.Uncheck Show shadows under menus.

TIPS AND TRICKS: Want to delete files permanently without moving them to the Recycle Bin. Pressing the "Shift+Delete" buttons at the same time when deleting will stop files from going to the recycle bin.

DEFINITION OF COMPUTER VIRUS, WORM, TROJAN HORSE: A VIRUS is a computer program that is capable of attaching to disks or other files and replicating itself repeatedly, typically without user knowledge or permission. A VIRUS is designed to spread from file to file on a single pc, it does not intentionally try to move to another pc, and it must replicate, and execute itself.

Unlike viruses WORMS do not infect other computer program files. These are parasitic computer programs and replicate by creating copies on the same computer, or they send the copies to other computers via a network.

A TROJAN HORSE is a malicious program that pretends to be a benign application. It purposefully does something the user does not expect. Trojans are not viruses since they do not replicate

TIPS AND TRICKS: There are many ways to print a document, but you can print a document quickly if you put a shortcut to the printer on your desktop and drag a document icon to it, no need to open file for printing just drag a file to printer icon and get your print. To do this, first click Start button, Settings, then Printers ( first make sure you installed your printer driver). When the Printers window opens, hold down Ctrl and drag the printer icon to your system desktop.
